Manthe Weekend

I have lived in a town called Vryburg in the North West during my high school years. This town is not far from a small town called Taung which is where my sister and a few of their friends annually go spend a weekend. We have heard stories about this town growing up and this was my first time staying a little bit longer.

This trip started three years ago and every year since then we have put together our money and resources to make it happen. It is called the Manthe weekend, it is filled with fun, food, traditional partying as well as strengthened friendships and too much offloading. It was my first time this year and I will be letting you in on my experience.

We plan for this trip on the last day of the weekend which is on a Sunday. The trip kick starts on a Friday where everyone leaves their respective places to the venue. We buy everything that we will need for the weekend in advance so that when we get there, we do not run around but stay at the lodge and have enough time to bond. When we arrived we checked the rooms allocated to us while we waited for the others. There were cocktails and juice, food everywhere and then it was time to dance as well as have girly conversations. It was 22:00 pm and the crew was complete. We started with the introductions and we were now sitting outside, listening to music, catching up, making phone calls, admiring the night sky and getting to know one another. I had a long day so around 02:00 am, I was cold and went to sleep instead.

Day 2 Saturday.
The day of the theme which is rugby shorts, rugby socks and all stars as well as tour day. When we woke up we cleaned around the room we were sleeping in, some went to bath and others put on the music as usual. It was 11:00 am everyone was ready and we were leaving the lodge to a town/village Thomeng in Norlim/Buxton, We drove for a very longtime and it seemed like those ghost town I read about in China, old  buildings being renovated and others being built while some are being torn down with no person in sight till we passed a few goats and an open tuck shop. We kept driving till we reached our destination which is called Small heaven and there so many people just relaxing and playing in the water. My surprise to this waterfall was where the water was actually falling from, on top of the mountain is was dry like the desert and the such was scotching hot not to mention the heat that day but halfway down that mountain there was ice cold water falling from those rocks: it was an unbelievable sight which makes one realize that God truly does exist.
We took a few pictures, danced and relaxed a bit then we were on the road again, everyone was sleepy and restless now because of the heat and the sweat but we were not giving up so we took a turn to the Taung Skull sight where we walked to the Blue Pools. The pools were not so blue but  green instead because of the algae. We explored so much we were tired by the time we were done so we rested by the picnic sight. We had an interesting conversation about how they could make it an attraction and still keep it sacred. We then went back to the others and were on our way back to Manthe. There were people who decided to go bath while others took naps, some got the equipment, ingredients ready for the traditional poitjiekos and we moved the music to where we will be chilling tonight. We ate a lovely meal then partied until 01:00 am and then we had to sleep.

Day3 Sunday
This being the last day was full of heartbreak and sad goodbyes but we played some very nice music which the people older than I am wondering how I listen to this music. We had our meeting regarding the trip as well as plans for the next one, we then discussed other valid misunderstandings and we started the fire for the braai, we finished and then ate by 15:00 pm we took our last picture outside the lodge.

It was an amazing weekend, as much as it was a holiday I learned a lot from other people and their values as well as what they see. It was as it everything that I have been studying came together that one weekend and I was grateful and realized why I chose to do what I am doing. I met amazing people whom I hope to see again next  year.
