Are they really that HIDDEN?
It just so happens that my friend and I went to the movies last week . We have been raving about going so we finally went there to watch "Hidden Figures" starring Taraji P. Henson, Janelle Monae and Octavia Spencer. This is a real story about a group of african american women who changed the world of NASA.
When I saw the preview, It did not occur to me that this movie was about colonialism and to this degree but I knew it was about empowering women so I needed to watch it no matter what, so my partner in crime was game and we headed to Nu-metro. It is an amazing story which features the struggle women faced in the workplace and how being black, female and educated did not matter at all. We are taken through a world of three women who changed the world of engineering and the difference in power of how men ruled the mechanics world,
The story follows three women who are mathematician, Mary has always wanted to be an engineer but in a world where being black and a woman who is educated has no merit, what makes it worse was when the company decided that the only way one can apply for the job was when they have studied with a university that only allows white people and not black people until she decides to contest against it. I remember she said something along the lines of "Don't you want to be the first?" What a way to take charge and be persuasive at the same time and those 7 words got the judge to grant her wish to become an engineering, the first black woman to go against the odds. When the company decides to get an IBM machine and struggle to install it, the women computing team lead by Dorothy took it upon themselves to learn how to assemble and make it work which they succeeded in doing, It shows that when one actually does take initiative things actually do come together and they work towards the greater good, When she was finally offered a promotion and refused to leave without her team. Katherine who had to run up and down from where she was working just to get to the bathroom on the other side and yet this woman managed to do her job and impress her boss at the same time
What I have learned from these women was how who you are can actually never determine where you are going no matter what. It is as simple as making it work in a world where everything seems impossible but actually getting to where you want to be. Our generation has more means and yet we are lazy, when I look back at what our great grandfathers were able to endure and still live to dream of a better world and yet we the ones who live in this better world are enable to make it great,
